ukas approved testing facility

Selden Research has strengthened its position as a major player in the global fight against swine flu by gaining accreditation for its independent research laboratory.

The laboratory based at Selden Research’s Buxton headquarters, is only the fourth in Britain to be endorsed for EN1276 disinfectant testing by the Government-approved United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

As the country’s most innovative manufacturer of professional products for the cleaning industry, Selden Research’s scientists have developed formulations to eradicate the bacteria and viruses causing swine flu, bird flu and MRSA.

Sales of Selden’s Flu virus certified disinfectant, Selgiene Ultra, have risen by 350 % in the past year. August will see the timely launch of a handy 100ml pump spray version of its alcohol hand sanitiser, Trust S.

The in-house research and development programme at Selden Research places products under constant review to meet the challenges posed by emerging pathogens.  Accreditation ensures the results of this work are guaranteed for accuracy, leading to more effective products.

Selden Research’s Technical Director, Pete Woodhead, says: “As health scares become more serious, it is of paramount importance that a disinfectant can be trusted to meet the claims on the label.  Our laboratory is one of only four in the country to be accredited by UKAS for performing the disinfectant test. This provides the end user with the confidence to rely on Selden products.”

“This is an important endorsement for Selden Research as it demonstrates the competence, impartiality and performance of our laboratory. It paves the way forward to help us equally combat the challenges of routine infection control and global pandemics.”

“Having formulated and tested to the highest standards, it is crucial that disinfectants are also manufactured to the same exacting standards. This accreditation comes on the back of previous successes for our business in achieving the international standards ISO 9001, 14001, 18001 and IPPC. People need to be able to trust the hygiene products they use as we live in frightening times with extremely contagious viruses around.” he says.

The laboratory validation coincides with the Chief Medical Officer, Sir Liam Donaldson’s prediction that swine flu could kill more that 40 Britons a day by the end of the summer. The Government fears there could be 100,000 new cases of swine flu every day by the end of August.

Sir Liam’s fears follow news that a patient with H1N1 Influenza in Denmark had shown resistance to the antiviral Tamiflu (oseltamivir), widely considered to be the most effective treatment against swine flu.

Working alongside Pete Woodhead on the laboratory accreditation has been microbiologist Lisa Powell MI Biol, C Biol, BSc, MPhil.  The family-owned business employs 110 and manufactures hundreds of products for professional use in hospitals, schools, care homes, offices as well as tourism and facilities management sectors.

IPPC is the Environmental Gold Standard for Manufacturing, permits are awarded by the Environment Agency.
18001 - the Health and Safety Management Standard
14001 - the Environmental Management Standard
9001 - the Quality Management Standard

UKAS is the sole national accreditation body recognised by the Government to assess, against internationally agreed standards, organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services. UKAS accreditation is voluntary.
